We Are Avrutis

My name is John J. Avrutis and this is my website project!

My family is originally from Russia, Austria, Brooklyn, Chicago, and maybe some other places.  I have lived my entire life in Long Island, New York.  I have sisters, children, ex-wives, the most amazing girlfriend, and 4 whacky but terrific dogs ranging from 14-65 lbs.

I had registered Avrutis.com about 32 years ago when the internet first started to become popular and lost it the morning of the day it expired before I could renew (someone really wanted it!).

Over the years I’d go to the URL to see what was happening – but never anything much.  For a while it seemed to be maintained, but then nothing changed, and it just faded away, left with an available message as the home page.  A few months ago, I looked for the URL again, saw it was still available, and in a moment of interest I purchased it.

I don’t really have a specific purpose for the site.  Initially I thought maybe make a family tree, but then I found on Ancestry.com and some other sites that there are plenty of Avrutis Family Trees already underway.  I haven’t subscribed to any yet, but likely will soon to see what’s out there.

I have boxes of old family photos – maybe I’ll scan and upload them, and someone will be surprised to see one of their grandparents or even just be able to shed light on who some of the people are.  My aunt was the Avrutis family historian, and as I’m sure happens in many families, no one listened to her stories as they should have, and all that knowledge disappeared with her passing about 12 years ago.

About 2 years ago I did 23andMe and thought there would be some overwhelming flood of relatives with the results! – cousins I might have met as a child but the families didn’t maintain contact, or long lost cousins (which I suppose they all are), etc. but with the exception of a few with a related rating close to 3% (all from the same family) which I’m told is fairly high, most are so far removed.  I received a few inquiries from some, and then contacted some with the highest % and kind of figured where we might be related – but again, it was a stretch: 3rd cousin of a cousin’s aunt, twice removed – or some such complicated relation.

So… This page is a start, it’s better than a typical ‘Under Construction’ notice.

Since this is more of a project for me to learn to make a website, and also provide a place for those Avrutis’ that are interested to maybe post, or check in, I’m not sure how often I will update or how far it will eventually develop.
